SocGen:

The stock has been under pressure (-11% over the month) given fears of a

prolonged shutdown of Japanese car producers. We have touched base with the

company, but it is too early to give any definitive guide to the impact of the disaster in

Japan. GKN has around £400m sales (7% of sales) in Japan and five manufacturing

facilities, primarily supplying driveline products for 4-wheel drive vehicles for export

(Nissan and Mitsibushi are big customers). All the GKN plants are able to produce

product, although there are some issues with power supplies. The key is the OEM

customers’ ability to manufacture cars – they are just trying to start up this week and it

will be some time before they can judge the full impact. Clearly, any prolonged stoppage

will be negative for sales & profit and accurate calculations will have to wait for a clearer

picture to emerge. However, we estimate a potential hit of £15m per month (3% of

annual trading profit) if they lose all sales for a month.
